7 Most Annoying Driving Habits

Most of us think that we’re excellent drivers with skills beyond reproach, but the sheer amount of bad habits other road users have would seem to suggest our collective standard is not as high as we’d like to think.

Outright dangerous and incompetent driving is thankfully pretty rare, but how many of us have been guilty of one or more of the seemingly more harmless annoyances below?

These are what we think are 7 of the most annoying driving habits.

1. Poor Roadworks & Lane Closure Etiquette

Roadworks and lane closures are the bane of drivers caught up in them, but even more annoying are drivers who refuse to play nicely in dealing with the problem. Those who ignore the warnings to merge lanes, speeding down the outside, and then expect to be let in at the last moment deserve to be studiously ignored and left to stew in their beloved outside lane.

2. Beeping at Traffic Lights

If you’re at the front of the queue on a red light, for some drivers behind you anything less than 0-60mph in 3 seconds as soon as the amber appears is a cause for aggressive beeping. These drivers are evidently so important they can’t afford to waste even a fraction of a second standing at traffic lights unnecessarily. What’s worse, they often compound the problem by…

3. Aggressive Tailgating

Driving up close behind someone else who’s considered to be going too slow is not only annoying and intimidating, it’s flat out dangerous. When a driver is constantly looking into the rear view mirror to check how close the tailgater is, less attention is being paid to the road in front which increases the chances of an accident – and also gives the tailgater less chance to react if the unexpected happens.

4. Slow Driving & Lane Hogging

On the other hand, drivers who occupy an overtaking lane while cruising along well within the speed limit, seemingly oblivious to the empty lanes to the side, cause frustration among other road users who want to legitimately drive at a faster speed.

5. Pointless Indicator Use

Even more annoying than a standard lane hogger is one who drives along in the middle lane with an indicator light flashing pointlessly. Is the driver actually planning to switch lanes? Or has he/she become distracted and forgotten they are giving other road users a completely unnecessary indication? Either way, driving behind or attempting to overtake can be a dicey situation, as you have no idea what their next move will be!

6. Spectacularly Incompetent Parking

A busy shopping trip on a blisteringly hot weekend can be enough to set anyone’s temper rising. When you think you’ve finally found a parking space after endless circling of the car park, only to find that an inconsiderate driver has managed to straddle two slots making your own parking impossible, it’s not surprising that fuses get blown.

7. Excessive, Continuous Braking

Believe it or not, brake lights have a purpose. They’re not there just to look pretty, but to warn the driver behind that a car is slowing or stopping, so that they’re ready to do the same. We’ve all seen drivers who constantly jab at their brakes, causing their lights to flash on and off needlessly. This completely defeats the point of brake lights which can then end up being ignored. To make things worse, these nervous brake-jabbers are often the ones who’ll suddenly pull out a near-emergency stop for no obvious reason, taking the hypnotised driver to the rear completely by surprise.
