Intelligent Speed Assistance

Intelligence Speed Assistance

Today, we’ll be introducing you to Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) which is one of the new technologies featured within Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
High-speed crashes are among the most tragic kinds of accidents on the roads, often having fatal consequences.
Preventing drivers from speeding has always been a priority for governments and road safety campaigners, and the introduction of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems can help keep everyone safe on the roads.

Why is ISA needed?

According to the European Transport Safety Council, speeding is a problem in all major European countries – including the UK.

The figures show that 500 people die on European roads every week, and there are five fatalities each day in the UK. Speed plays a big role in these incidents, with it being the primary factor in a third of fatal collisions.

Having Intelligent Speed Assistance systems installed could reduce these collisions by 30% and deaths by up to 20%.
The stats also show that having a car fitted with Intelligent Speed Assistance is better for the environment, reducing CO2 emissions by 8%

What is ISA?

Intelligent Speed Assistance is regarded as one of the most effective systems when it comes to saving lives on the road.

Designed to prevent drivers from speeding, ISA will detect the speed limit of the road you’re travelling on and adjust maximum speed accordingly. If drivers begin to exceed the speed limit, the car will automatically limit the speed to the appropriate amount.

Drivers will also be alerted of the speed limit on the dashboard and with audible alerts.

From 2022 onwards, it’ll be mandatory for all new cars in both the UK and the EU to have Intelligent Speed Assistance systems in place.

How does ISA work?

Using onboard cameras, sensors, radars and GPS, the software creates a digital map, recognising the designated speed limit on any given road.

The position of the car on the road will also be logged, establishing exactly where you’re located and the speed limits in the area. The system will detect real-life road signs, meaning the speed limit is being constantly monitored. If the car does go above the speed limit, warning sounds will let the driver know and the car will automatically be slowed down.

The process of slowing down will happen gradually, restricting the flow of fuel to the engine until the speed limit is reached. The brakes are not touched as this is happening, so you don’t need to worry about coming to a sudden stop.
