How to Buy a Car in the Coronavirus Pandemic

Coronavirus and the restrictions imposed because of it have affected literally everything in our daily lives, from the way we interact with our friends and family to the way we buy things we need. With the various rules around retail and what is and isn’t classed as ‘essential’, those who are in need of a new car may well be confused as to how they can go about getting one. In this article, The Windscreen Company will talk you through how to buy a car during COVID-19.

Can I still buy a car during the Coronavirus pandemic?

The answer, in short, is yes. However, as with almost every industry, the processes around buying a car are somewhat different at the moment, – going into dealerships is either subject to significant restrictions or totally out of the question. Many dealerships are getting round this by offering different services for those looking for a new vehicle.

Online

Buying a car online is probably the most convenient and accessible way to purchase a car during any COVID-19-related restrictions. Many dealerships now offer contactless delivery, too, so you can receive your car whilst maintaining social distancing. When browsing car sites, look out for banners alerting you to dealers that offer 100% remote purchasing and contact-free delivery.

Test drives

Test drives are not allowed under the current COVID-19 regulations. This doesn’t mean you should give up on a certain car, though; you can still get a comprehensive evaluation of the car from things like video reviews and testimonials.

Video calls

As a car is such a significant purchase, you’ll understandably want to know as much as you can about a vehicle before parting with your money. See if your local dealership offers video calls – this way, you can have a detailed discussion about the car with a professional who will be able to answer your questions.

Can I buy a used car during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Firstly, you must consider that under current travel restrictions, travelling to a private seller may be illegal, depending on where you are. It won’t be defined as ‘essential travel’. Arrange for delivery if possible, or you can perhaps buy the car from a private seller and ask them to hold onto it until we’re allowed to travel again.

You certainly can buy a used car during the coronavirus pandemic, however there’s always going to be a certain degree of risk, depending on where you buy it from. If you’re buying from a private seller, you’ll have to trust that they have cleaned the car thoroughly before you get it. During communication with the seller, you can ask them to clean and sanitise the car before selling it to you.

Used car dealerships will take all necessary steps to ensure their cars are properly cleaned inside and out before selling them, but make sure you confirm this with them before organising the delivery of your new vehicle.

Deliveries

It’s important to remember that the delivery of your vehicle may be delayed as a result of the pandemic. If you’re buying a car that is made to order, then the factory may be experiencing unprecedented strain, so their processes might be affected.

A lot of planning needs to go into buying a car in normal circumstances, but in the current situation, much more preparation is required in order to ensure a safe, reliable purchase. You needn’t write off your new car hopes, but you need to take a few more steps in order to secure your new vehicle.
