UK Electric Car Sales Set For Continued Growth in 2022

It’s been a strange old time for the automotive industry of late. New car registrations hit an all-time low at the end of 2021, as a combination of the COVID-19 pandemic and a global supply issue of semiconductor chips continued to plague the industry.

But one part of the sector that has remained stable and looks set for continued growth in 2022 is electric vehicles. With electric cars and the infrastructure required to power them becoming more commonplace throughout society, we should perhaps not be surprised at the growth being experienced, but it’s still an interesting trend for the industry.

Electric car sales almost doubled in January 2022

UK electric car sales almost doubled in January compared to the same month last year, with a 90% increase in purchases from January 2021.

In total, more than 23,000 plug-in electric cars were sold in the opening month of 2022, as well as an additional 13,000 non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles. This means that almost a third of car sales in January were some form of electric vehicle — a real boost for the industry.

The most popular selling electric car was the Kia e-Niro, with more than 2,000 sold as the manufacturer aims to place a greater focus on EVs.

Plug-in electric vehicle share hits 20%

In addition to the fantastic electric car sales at the start of 2022, the industry has also seen its market share enhanced. The market share refers to the percentage of electric vehicles sold in relation to other types of vehicles in the automotive industry.

As you can see from the chart below, the UK plug-in electric vehicle share reached 20% in January, with full-battery electric cars making up 12% of this figure. While petrol vehicles still make up the majority of the vehicle share with 44%, it’s a clear indication that electric cars are on the rise. Diesel purchases have declined significantly, with this making up just 5.2% of the entire vehicle share.

Many industry experts are anticipating for this vehicle share to rise even more significantly, and perhaps even reach 50% by December.

Why are electric car sales growing?

There are a number of variables as to why the sales of electric vehicles continue to grow. Primarily, the rise is an indication of consumers’ interest swaying toward more sustainable options. Climate change has been a major issue for a while now, but in the last few years, the topic seems to have gained even more traction on the news agenda thanks to climate activists and events such as COP26 that took place in Glasgow last year. With many people looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly, purchasing an electric car has become a popular way that people can make a difference.

Plus, EVs have also become more accessible and mainstream. While there’s still a way to go until they become as affordable as other options, they’ve undoubtedly become cheaper over the years. Furthermore, there has been an increase in infrastructure, such as community charging stations, meaning people are more comfortable that they’re not going to be caught out while out and about in their electric car. This looks set to improve even more following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement that it will become a legal requirement for all new homes to include electric vehicle charging points.
