What to Look Out For When Buying Windscreen Insurance?

pen and calculatorDamage to a car windscreen can easily happen through loose stones on the road or even excessively cold weather in the winter. Even if the damage only appears to be a small chip, it could have bigger consequences. If the chip is in the driver’s sight-line then the car will fail the next MOT and it is also possible that a chip could get worse at any time and turn into a crack across the windscreen.

Taking out insurance cover for damage to your windscreen means that dealing with any chips, cracks or scratches on your windscreen is an easy and cost free process. Small chips to your windscreen may be able to be repaired and your cover would include replacement of the windscreen if this was necessary. Windscreen cover can differ depending on the type of insurance policy so this is worth considering when you decide on your new insurance policy.

Fully Comprehensive Insurance

This type of insurance will normally include windscreen cover automatically as part of the policy. If it is not included then it may be listed as an optional extra that you can select when you take out the insurance. Claiming on the policy to have your windscreen replaced or repaired will not have any effect on your no claims bonus. It is common for a Fully Comprehensive Policy to include a separate excess charge solely to cover windscreen repairs or replacements and this is worth checking when you take out the insurance.

Third Party, Fire and Theft Insurance

A policy taken out on this basis will not usually automatically include cover for damage to the windscreen. It may be possible to have it added onto the policy for an additional cost but this will need to be discussed with the insurance company. If windscreen cover can be added onto the policy then an excess charge will usually apply if there is a claim, but your no claims bonus should not change.

Windscreen Insurance Cover

If you discover that your insurance policy does not include any cover for windscreen damage then it is possible to take out a separate insurance policy just to deal with this possibility. This would ensure you still have cover if it cannot be added to your existing car insurance. You could do this with your existing car insurance provider or shop around for the best deal.

Check with Your Insurance Company

If you are unsure about whether you already have cover for windscreen replacement or repair as part of your current car insurance policy then you should speak directly to your insurance company and ask them to clarify your cover. Although we have dealt with the three types of policy and how they normally impact on windscreen cover, it is worth remembering that all policies can differ slightly depending on the provider. Do not assume that you definitely have cover or wait until your windscreen is damaged before you check your policy. Ensure that your windscreen is properly covered against all types of damage and give yourself complete peace of mind.
