British Grand Prix Results 2022

The start of July saw the return of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix to Silverstone in Northamptonshire.

One of the most iconic races on the Formula 1 calendar, the 2021 edition of the event was hugely controversial due to an incident involving title challengers Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen which saw the latter crash out.

And this year’s race was just as action-packed. If you missed any of the drama, The Windscreen Company has put together a review that covers all the main talking points.

Main moments

Having qualified on pole position for the first time ever during a rainy session on the Saturday, Ferrari’s Spanish driver Carlos Sainz was hoping to finish the job and secure his first ever race win on Sunday.

However, the race was brought to a premature stop after just 10 seconds as the Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu was involved in a horror crash that saw his car skid upside down along the track and flip over a barrier in front of spectators. Thankfully, no harm came to him with the Halo, a safety innovation introduced in 2015, likely saving his life.

Following the restart, it looked like it would be the same old story, with Championship leader Max Verstappen taking the lead and Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz trying to chase him down. However, Verstappen suffered damage to his car which meant he could not reach optimum speeds and had to settle for 7th place.

This led to a battle out in front including both Ferraris, Red Bull driver Sergio Perez and British favourite Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes

In the end, it was Carlos Sainz who established a dominant lead with the other three drivers scrapping for the two remaining podium places. Some truly magnificent racing ensued, much to the delight of the Silverstone crowd, with the three cars trading places multiple times. In the end, Perez and Hamilton joined Sainz on the podium with the Spaniard securing his first ever win in Formula 1 in his 150th race.

British stars

Unsurprisingly, most of the support over the course of the British Grand Prix weekend was directed at the sport’s three British drivers, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Lando Norris.

Both Hamilton and Russell drive for a Mercedes team that has won the last eight World Championships in a row, with Hamilton himself regarded as one of the sport’s greatest ever drivers with a joint-highest seven world titles. 2022 has been a frustrating year for the team as the change in regulations have seen Mercedes leapfrogged by Red Bull and Ferrari in the standings.

Despite this, both Hamilton and Russell have been able to achieve podium finishes during the season. At Silverstone, Hamilton was able to secure third position much to the delight of the crowd. Unfortunately for Russell, he crashed out in the incident with Zhou and was unable to continue.

Norris is one of the grid’s most popular personalities and, despite having a somewhat inconsistent year for McLaren, he achieved a respectable sixth place finish during the British Grand Prix that earned him eight points in the World Championship standings.

Record-breaking weekend

Formula 1 is experiencing something of a boom at the moment, with the sport seemingly more popular than ever before. Much of this has been put down to the Netflix series Drive to Survive which has drawn in waves of new fans thanks to its fascinating behind-the-scenes content of some of the sport’s biggest moments in recent years.

This interest has been reflected in attendance figures – particularly post-pandemic. At Silverstone, it was no different. A record-breaking 142,000 were at Silverstone to see Carlos Sainz win his first ever Formula 1 race, with a staggering 401,000 attending over the course of the whole weekend.
