China’s BYD is Selling more EVs than Tesla!

When you think of electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla is perhaps the first brand that springs to mind.

Elon Musk’s automotive company released their first electric car in 2008, and since then has become the dominant force in the industry, releasing numerous models and selling millions of units across the world.

However, this could be set to change.

Seemingly out of nowhere, although those who pay attention to these things will know they’ve been around for a while, Chinese manufacturer BYD sold more electric vehicles than Tesla in the final quarter of 2023.

In this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will take a closer look at this milestone and what it might mean for the future of the EV industry.

China’s BYD is selling more electric cars than Tesla

In the last quarter of 2023, it was revealed that Chinese electric vehicle brand BYD sold more electric cars than Tesla for the first time. A record 526,000 EVs were sold by the company during this period, as China as a whole looks to make its mark on the industry.

BYD was founded in the city of Shenzhen in 2003 and specialises in the sale of electric vehicles. In recent years it has grown exponentially, and recently became the best-selling brand in China, overtaking Volkswagen.

The Chinese automotive industry on the whole looks set to dominate in future years, with more and more models making their way onto American and European roads. Predominantly, this is because Chinese companies are able to offer cheaper prices for their cars as their government offers financial incentives to companies making EVs and labour costs are not as high as in the Western world.

Who has sold the most EVs in the world?

While the last quarter of 2023 may have seen Chinese manufacturer BYD make history by outselling market dominator Tesla for the first time ever, when looking at 2023 as a whole Tesla remained on top.

Best Selling Electric Cars In The World-01

In the last year, the Tesla Model Y once again topped the charts as the best-selling electric vehicle in the world. While we currently only have the data from January-August, it sold more than 700,000 vehicles in this period, with the Tesla Model 3 the next best with just over 350,000. Experts estimate that this information is enough to confidently state that the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling EV of the year, a title it has also held previously.

The top five best-selling EVs in 2023 were as follows.

  • BYD Atto 3 / Yuan Plus (265, 688)
  • BYD Dolphin (222, 825)
  • GAC Aion S (160, 693)

The presence of BYD vehicles on this list, in addition to the achievement of overtaking Tesla’s sales in the final quarter of 2023, is a clear indication that they are set to go toe-to-toe with Tesla for many years to come.
