Does Your Car Insurance Policy Include Windscreen Cover?

If you’re a motorist who is regularly out and about on the UK’s busy roads, you’ll know only too well how easy it is for stones and debris to flick up onto your windscreen.

While most of the time this can be harmless, in some instances it causes chips or cracks that can become an immediate hazard. Not only can damage to a windscreen be a major inconvenience, but in many cases it can also make your car illegal to drive.

With this in mind, it’s vital that you get any damage fixed immediately. Not only is this important for road safety, but also to minimise disruption to your daily life.

As well as being focused on getting your windscreen repaired, many drivers will also be concerned about cost and insurance claims.

In this article, we’ll take a look at windscreen insurance cover and whether your policy protects you from damage sustained to this area of your vehicle.

What are the types of insurance cover?

Before we see if your insurance covers you for windscreen damage, it’s important to understand the different types of vehicle insurance available. This will help you have a greater understanding of what coverage you have, and what it provides you with.

There are three types of insurance available. These are:

  • Third-party – the most basic level of insurance available. It typically covers any damage that your vehicle causes to another in an accident. However, third-party does not cover you or your vehicle in any way.
  • Third-party, fire and theft – covers the same things as standard third-party cover, and while you and your vehicle won’t be covered during an accident, if your car is stolen or set on fire you will be entitled to make a claim.
  • Comprehensive – the highest level of cover. For full peace of mind, comprehensive insurance will protect you in many instances including accidents, fire, theft, accidental damage, vandalism and – depending on the specifics of your individual policy – windscreen damage.

Is windscreen insurance cover included in my policy?

If you have fully comprehensive cover in place, it’s likely that any damage sustained to your windscreen will be covered. Other types of insurance will not cover windscreen repairs.

However, it’s always worth checking the specifics of your policy even if you have fully comprehensive cover in place. At The Windscreen Company, we can help you determine exactly what your policy includes.
