It’s been a tough few years for the automotive industry.
A combination of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global shortage of semiconductor chips and a shift towards electric vehicles has meant that automotive companies have had to juggle a whole host of issues.
However, some brands are still continuing to thrive.
Market research company YouGov recently released its annual Auto Rankings report for 2023, outlining which car brands are most popular among consumers.
Let’s take a closer look at the report and which brands have come out on top this year.
YouGov is one of the biggest market research companies in the world operating in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. The company regularly posts surveys and statistics relating to a wide range of topics, including politics, current affairs, popular culture and more.
For many years they’ve also released an annual report called the YouGov Auto Rankings. Drawing on market research from thousands of motorists worldwide, the report determines which car brands are most popular each year. For 2023 they’ve focused on 18 key automotive markets, as well as drawing up a list of the top 10 car brands globally.
The way they compare brands tends to change slightly each year to be as accurate as possible. For 2023, YouGov has created an ‘index’ metric that uses factors such as general impressions, satisfaction, quality, corporate reputation, value and recommendation. These factors then generate a score for each brand that makes up the rankings.
The top ten most popular automotive brands in the UK in 2023 are as follows:
Despite not making it into the top ten, YouGov lists the Korean brand Kia as the UK’s most improved brand when it comes to popularity in 2023.
In the USA, it’s Japanese giant Toyota that tops the charts as the most popular manufacturer, with Volkswagen not featuring at all. Toyota’s score of 35.6 sees them lead the way, with the top ten shaping up as:
Once again, Kia leads the way as the USA’s most improved car brand.
Curiously, the UAE’s most popular car brands are identical to that of the UK. Volkswagen once again leads the way with the entire top ten replicating the UK’s list.

As well as providing rankings for individual companies, YouGov’s report also lists the top ten car brands globally. In 2023, Toyota topped the charts and is considered the most popular manufacturer on the planet.
