Inserting Smart Glass Technology (ADAS) in EV Fleets

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more and more commonplace on British roads, with the UK reaching the milestone of over a million EVs in 2024.

Going hand in hand with EVs is smart technology, particularly in the form of advanced driver assistance systems or ADAS as it is more commonly known.

Smart technology can be seen in a wide range of areas of day-to-day life, from our mobile phones to virtual assistants like Alexa in our homes. And, since 2016, almost every new EV  has included some form of ADAS smart technology.

As well as autonomous emergency braking and parking assistance, smart glass has become a popular innovation.

In this article, the team at The Windscreen Company will take a look at how this technology has evolved over the years and explain the benefits smart glass can bring to EV fleets.

What is smart glass technology?

In short, smart glass technology refers to glass that is able to change its appearance and properties as a result of a number of factors. This can include light, heat and electricity.

In the automotive industry, smart glass is typically used to ensure the driver has a clear view of the road ahead and can be automatically or manually triggered to help the user manage light levels when they’re driving.

The evolution of smart glass technology in EV fleets

The origins of smart glass can be traced back to the 1980s when it was created by the Swedish scientist Claes-Göran Granqvist at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. He was looking for ways to make building materials more energy efficient and created a material that could change its tint from transparent to opaque depending on the environmental conditions.

This first example of smart glass has been developed further in the intervening years, and in 2009 it was first introduced into vehicles. Then, from 2016 onwards, it started to become more common due to its integration with ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems).

According to market forecasts, the smart glass industry is expected to grow exponentially between 2024 and 2031, with commercial EV fleets playing a big part in the rise.

This is because smart glass offers a wide range of benefits to commercial fleets including:

  • Windscreen video sensors that warn you when you’re leaving your lane as part of lane departure alert systems.
  • Camera and radars that provide collision warnings.
  • Automatic rain-sensing wipers.
  • Sensors to moderate lighting and trigger defrosters when necessary.
