Is Apple Launching an iCar?

Since its inception in the 1970s, Apple has transformed the way the human race has communicated with each other. From starting out as a passion project between friends to becoming one of the most influential institutions on the planet, you’d be hard pressed to find many people in the modern world who haven’t felt the impact of the behemoth electronics and computer company.

Is Apple Launching an iCar?

Over the course of the 21st century, Apple has positioned itself as a leader in its sector, moving away from just manufacturing computers and becoming the number one mobile phone company in the world.

Always innovating, Apple is continually looking for new opportunities to enter new markets and for many years there have been rumours that they’re planning on joining the automotive sector.

And now, we’ve received the first signs of what a future Apple iCar might actually include, thanks to a number of patents lodged by the company in recent months. While the design and what the car will look like remain very much the source of speculation, what we do know are a few of the features we’re likely to see.

Described in the patents as Apple Project Titan, we’ve put together a list of some of the most exciting elements that have been revealed.

It includes a screen on your car’s exterior

Perhaps the most exciting development revealed in Apple Project Titan, is that they’re planning on including a screen on the car itself. While screens are pretty common in modern cars, the patent reveals that this one will be on the outside of the car, on the bodywork itself.

Rather than metal bodywork, a screen will be wrapped around the car’s exterior and is likely to be fully customisable, allowing drivers to select different colours, patterns, images and feature their own text. So, you better get thinking of some witty slogans to include.

The screen will have a practical function too, and will help enhance safety. This is because speedometers can be included, allowing other road users to see how fast you’re going, as well as warning or stopping signs – all of which can provide more information to everyone else you’re sharing the road with.

A new key system

Unlocking and starting the car has changed quite a bit over the years. These days, you don’t even need to put a key in the ignition to get it going. And, by the looks of Apple’s patents, the phone giants have their own ideas to revolutionise car access. If you have an iPhone or Apple Watch, it’s likely that you’ll be opening and starting the vehicle with a tap on one of these devices.

This isn’t brand new, as Tesla already allows drivers to open their cars via their mobile phone. However, it looks like Apple will take this even further by incorporating Face ID on their cars. This could be implemented on smart windows, meaning you’d simply have to look at your car for it to open and start the ignition.

Keeping you comfortable with climate control

The Apple Project Titan also features information regarding controlling the climate within your car while driving. We’ve all been in hot, stuffy cars while out and about on a summer’s day, and it isn’t pleasant. But this experience could be a thing of the past with an iCar.

Instead, your car will automatically tailor its interior temperature to suit the weather – meaning no more fiddling with AC dials to try and cool down, or warm up when it gets cold.

In fact, according to the patents, the car will be able to specifically analyse every part of your body while you’re driving, and adjust the temperature accordingly. So, if your head is getting too warm, it can provide cool air while simultaneously warming up your feet if they’re feeling a bit chilly.

Enjoy safe lounged seating

Unsurprisingly with the direction the industry is heading in, Apple’s iCar is likely to come with some form of autonomy. As with other manufacturers, the Apple self-drive car is likely to feature an element of lounged seating, meaning those in the driving seat will be able to reverse their chair to engage in conversation with passengers.

Many self-driving cars are exploring lounged seating options, but the main criticism of this is that if an accident occurs, it’s dangerous for all within the vehicle. Apple has seemingly solved this problem, with airbags located in the roof that will be triggered and drop down to protect occupants if a collision occurs.

While we’re still a few years away from seeing whether Apple Project Titan will become a reality (tentative predictions estimate a 2024 launch), it remains to be seen just how many of the patented elements will be included if the iCar does hit the production line. Some reports even suggest that it will come with no steering wheels or pedals. Whatever the case, one thing you can be sure of is that Apple will look to transform the automotive industry as they have done with all of their other endeavours.
