Mercedes-Benz Recalls Thousands of Vehicles in Global Braking Problem

For almost 100 years, Mercedes-Benz has been at the pinnacle of the luxury automotive industry. The brand’s three-pointed star logo has become synonymous with elegance and style, and the traditional German manufacturing combined with modern innovation is regarded as a bastion of reliability.
With all this in mind, it came as something of a shock when Mercedes announced they were going to have to recall thousands of their products due to issues with braking.
Impacting vehicles all over the world, read on to find out everything you need to know about the issue.
Since the announcement at the start of June 2022 that Mercedes would be recalling thousands of its products, motorists all over the world have been affected. Impacting ML, GL and SUV models that were released between 2004 and 2015, 993,407 cars around the world have been recalled. The fact that almost a million cars have been affected makes it one of the biggest product recalls in Mercedes’ history.
70,000 of the vehicles recalled are in Germany, and while it’s not known how many are in the UK, all three models are sold here. With this in mind, if you do own an ML, GL or SUV Mercedes, you’re advised not to drive them until it’s been inspected by a professional.
The reason the recall has taken place is down to an issue surrounding the brakes. The brake booster on the affected models is suffering from advanced corrosion.
This means that motorists will have to increase the amount of force they apply to the pedal in order to get the vehicle to stop – making it more dangerous to drive. In some rare instances, the corrosion might be so bad that the brake stops working altogether.
Germany’s transport department (KBA) has said: “Corrosion on the brake booster can, in the worst case, lead to the connection between the brake pedal and the braking system being interrupted. As a consequence, the service brake can stop functioning.”
If you own an affected model, you can expect to receive correspondence from Mercedes soon. They’ll conduct all repairs free of charge before returning your now fully safe vehicle to you.
In the meantime, if you want to check if your vehicle is affected by the recall, Mercedes has an online tool on their website. Simply input your registration number and you’ll be instructed what to do next.
