Most Economical Cars On Sale 2022

Saving money is a priority for most people at the moment. Among an unprecedented cost of living crisis, war in Europe and soaring inflation rates, it’s fair to say that tightening our belts is going to be a reality for everyone for a while.

With this in mind, it’s important to cut costs in any way you can. This is why many consumers are becoming more selective when it comes to the cars they drive, looking for vehicles that are more efficient when it comes to fuel and running costs.

Here at The Windscreen Company, we’ve put together a list of some of the most economical cars available in 2022.

Peugeot 208 1.5 Blue Hdi

Regarded as the most economical cars in the UK, the Peugeot 208 1.5 is extremely efficient when it comes to fuel consumption. With a 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine, it has an impressive economy figure of 73.6mpg.

This efficiency doesn’t mean that performance is impacted though. Able to go from 0-60 in 9.6 seconds, the diesel engine can more than hold its own when out and about.

Nissan Leaf Hatchback

More and more people are making the transition from fuel cars to electric vehicles. As well as making the change for environmental reasons, being more economical is another reason why people might consider going for an EV.

The Nissan Leaf Hatchback is one of the most popular electric vehicles around. Costing nothing in road tax, cheaper to maintain and an alternative to rising fuel bills, it stands out when it comes to cars that are not expensive to run.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Plug-In

With the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Plug-In, the driver can choose whether to power it via electricity or fuel. Using electric power is far cheaper than relying on the car guzzling fuel, and this model has an enviable fuel economy of around 250mpg.

Dacia Sandero

Arguably one of the most economical petrol cars you can buy, the Dacia Sandero has extremely low running costs. If you’re looking to buy a new car, the Sandero is also considered to be one of the Romanian brand’s budget options so the initial cost will not set you back a fortune either.

Citroen C3 1.5 Blue Hdi

With an engine that’s almost identical to the Peugeot we mentioned earlier, it’s no surprise that the Citroen C3 1.5 Blue Hdi is on the list of the most economical cars in 2022. Due to its slightly taller bodywork, the C3 consumes slightly more fuel than the 208, but it still has an excellent fuel economy figure of 70.6mg.

Skoda Octavia 2.0

Slightly bigger than previous models, the Skoda Octavia 2.0 comes with a whole host of advanced technology features. Even though it’s large in size, its efficiency is not compromised and depending on the type of model you opt for, provides a fuel efficiency of anywhere between 50-65mpg.

Kia Niro SUV

The Kia Niro SUV is available in a variety of models including hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric versions. The more expensive the model the more you’re likely to save on fuel bills so depending on your budget, it might be worth splashing the cash upfront in order to save you money in the long run.

Volkswagen Golf 2.0

If you’re looking for a more compact car that’s still excellent at saving money and being more efficient when out on the road, the Volkswagen Golf 2.0 is the way to go.

A modern and spacious vehicle, it’s extremely practical and has a fuel economy rating of 67.3mpg.

Toyota Yaris Cross SUV

For many years, Japanese manufacturers Toyota have led the way when it comes to electric and hybrid vehicles. The Yaris Cross SUV uses a self-charging model to produce extra electricity from energy that would otherwise be wasted.

This method helps the vehicle to conserve energy and save you money.

Ford Kuga SUV

Known for being extremely smooth to drive and full of space, the Ford Kuga SUV is one of the brand’s most functional models.

As well as these practicalities, the fact it’s cheap to run is another reason why it’s proven to be a hit with consumers. It has both plug-in hybrid and standard hybrid options with a vast electric range of 39 miles and lower CO2 emissions.
