Solar Trees That Can Charge Electric Cars

The electric vehicle market is booming in the UK, with more and more people investing in EVs. As people become increasingly conscious of climate change and their impact on the environment, consumers are beginning to make the shift to electric-powered vehicles.

While electric cars are increasing in popularity, the infrastructure is still lagging behind, despite more and more charging points cropping up around the country.

However, could SolarBotanic trees be the solution?

London-based solar energy company SolarBotanic Trees has created an innovative and futuristic product known as solar trees that they claim could be the future of electric vehicle charging…

What are they and how do they work?

SolarBotanic Trees released a prototype of its solar tree product in September 2022, working in collaboration with:

Of course, it’s not a tree in the traditional sense. The product is actually a solar charging point designed in the shape of a tree and includes the world’s first 3D leaf-shaped photovoltaic nanotechnology. This technology can harness the energy required to power electric cars and even homes.

Currently, the first generation of solar trees has a power capacity of 5kW but this is expected to increase as the technology develops. The trees also feature a sophisticated artificial intelligence energy storage system, meaning they can regulate themselves when it comes to power management and storing energy.

Where will they be?

The first trees are expected to be ready later this year with the second generation to be released in 2024 and the third generation in 2025.

Electric vehicle charging service provider company, RAW Charging Group, is the first company to have made an order, requesting 200 trees.

While the product is designed to be aesthetically pleasing, initially they will only be located in commercial locations with airports, shopping centres, exhibition centres and sports stadiums all earmarked as potential spaces.

Long-term, SolarBotanic Trees expects the products to be used for residential properties, powering homes with clean, solar energy in the future.

The rise of electric cars

As previously mentioned, electric cars are now more popular than they’ve ever been before. In fact, 2022 saw the biggest-ever increase in annual electric car registrations in the UK with over 395,000 battery electric vehicles registered. This reflects a growth of 92% since 2020, and there are currently over 620,000 battery electric cars in the country as well as more than 440,000 plug-in hybrids.

In terms of market share, the last month of 2022 saw over 30% of new car registrations come from the electric car industry. This shows that the industry has come a long way in recent years. In fact, in 2015 just 1% of cars registered that year came with a plug, compared to over 25% in the whole of 2022.

If recent trends are anything to go by, 2023 could be even bigger for this market.
