Someone Smashed My Car Window – What Do I Do?

Your car is probably only second to your home when it comes to assets you value most, so if it’s damaged or broken into it can be extremely concerning.

As well as the logistical problems this can bring, it can also be a very distressing experience especially if the car has been broken into by a thief. For many people, it’s normal to feel quite panicked and upset, and it can be difficult to know what to do.

With this in mind, the team here at The Windscreen Company has put together a step-by-step guide outlining everything you should do if your car window has been smashed.

What to do if someone smashes your car window

1. Document the scene

First things first, take a deep breath and assess the situation. If anything has been stolen, document it and take some photos of the scene. Also, check if any of the car’s components have been taken.

If your wallet or purse has been taken and it contains credit or debit cards, it’s always safe to cancel your cards so be sure to get in touch with the bank.

2. Get in touch with the police

Next, it’s time to inform the authorities. Give the police a ring (your local police station, not 999) or head to the station in person to file a report. Make sure you have your driving licence, vehicle registration and insurance details handy, as the police will normally require these for the report.

3. Patch the window

Until you can get your window repaired, it’s going to be vulnerable so it’s important that you get it temporarily patched up. This is something you can do yourself, and will also keep it protected from the rain until your new window has been installed.

First, put on some thick gloves and remove any remaining shards of glass. It’s also worthwhile running a vacuum cleaner over the area to make sure you’ve cleaned up all of the glass.

Use masking tape to patch the door. Begin by covering any exposed paint with the tape, before stretching the tape from top to bottom over the opening in long strips. Repeat the process on the inside of the car, and until the window is fully patched.

4. Contact a professional glass replacement company

Next, it’s time to get in touch with a professional and dependable glass replacement company who can fix the problem.

At The Windscreen Company, we’re able to provide a brand new window to vehicles of every make and model meaning you can rest assured that we have you covered no matter what you drive.

Is my no claims discount affected if I make a windscreen claim?

You may want to get your insurance company involved to pay for the damage. Usually, there’s no need to worry about your no claims discount (NCD) as it is not affected by a window or windscreen replacement.

However, just to be sure, at The Windscreen Company we’re able to handle insurance claims on your behalf.

We provide professional and dedicated windscreen and window repairs and replacement services to motorists throughout the West Midlands and the South East. For more information on a side window replacement or car window replacement, get in touch with The Windscreen Company today.
