The Evolution and Future of Windscreen Technology

As one of the most important safety aspects of every vehicle, windscreens have changed significantly over the years.

From changes in the type of glass used to the incorporation of technology, windscreens are now very different from when they were first introduced.

And, as the automotive industry gets to grips with more smart technologies, it’s likely to evolve even more in the future.

At The Windscreen Company, we always ensure we’re at the forefront of the latest developments in windscreen technology.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the future of the industry and examine the changes we’re likely to see in years to come.

The historical evolution of windscreen technology

Before we look to the future, let’s first focus on the historical evolution of windscreens.

While the first cars to hit the roads were not particularly fast, drivers were still hit by insects, stones and other types of debris.

With this in mind, the first windscreen was born.

Here’s a quickfire history of windscreens:

  • 1904 – The first windscreen was invented
  • 1915 – Windscreens started to be sold as standard
  • 1919 – Laminated glass was invented to enhance windscreen safety
  • 1937 – It was made compulsory for all vehicles to feature laminated glass
  • 1938 – Shatterproof tempered glass was invented
  • 1947 – The first curved windscreen was created
  • 1982 – A windscreen repair system was developed, meaning cracks could be fixed for the first time

Present day – Windscreens are now available in a variety of specifications, including tints to reduce UV light and heat from entering the vehicle, as well as panoramic options.

Smart windscreens – a glimpse into the future

There’s no doubt that fundamental change is on the horizon when it comes to the automotive industry.

In fact, it’s predicted that the next decade will see more development in cars than the last 100 years put together.

The biggest change is likely to be the introduction of driverless cars, and while we’re a long way off seeing cars drive around with no human intervention, the early signs have started to appear in many vehicles.

Smart windscreens are one part of the driving experience that is likely to become more commonplace in both the short and long term.

Some features that are predicted to become more popular in windscreens include the following:

Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (HUD)

The most obvious example of smart technology being used in windscreens is augmented reality head-up display, or HUD.

HUD technology sees text, images and sometimes animated objects, projected onto the screen in front of the driver, providing them with key information about the road ahead.

This could be road signs, speed limits, fuel levels and more, with GPS systems also incorporated.

Previously used in military planes, the technology has now begun transitioning to cars, and while it is currently still only a select few manufacturers that offer this product, it’s set to become even more mainstream.

Wiperless windscreen

As everyone who lives in the UK knows, the British weather can put a lot of strain on our windscreens. The rain and winter weather means windscreen wipers are a necessity to ensure drivers maintain a clear view of the road ahead.

However, numerous manufacturers have been working on wiperless windscreen systems that can clear moisture from glass without the need for wipers.

British supercar brand McLaren has led the way in this area, developing a solution that utilises ultrasonic technology that is usually found on fighter jets. An ultrasonic field is created on the windscreen, repelling water, moisture and debris.

While this technology remains in its infancy, it’s likely to develop further in the future.

Pioneering modern windscreen technology

At The Windscreen Company, we’ve made sure to stay on top of all the latest windscreen industry developments.

As part of our leading windscreen repairs and replacement service, we make sure to use advanced coatings that ensure visibility is enhanced when you get back behind the wheel.

Plus, we’re able to source the perfect glass no matter what type of vehicle you drive, providing the most durable options that keep you protected.

Revolutionary windscreen materials and sustainability

As highlighted above, windscreens have changed a huge amount over the years. This includes the type of materials used to create the glass.

One revolutionary invention that looks set to develop further in the coming years is gorilla glass.

Most typically associated with smartphones, tablets and other digital devices, gorilla glass is one of the most durable types of glass available. It is scratch-resistant and prevents phones from being smashed when dropped, so it’s no surprise that it’s also starting to be utilised when manufacturing windscreens.

And the benefits don’t end there.

Because gorilla glass is lighter than other glass types, it means the overall weight of the car is lighter – resulting in better fuel efficiency. In an era when more and more consumers are conscious of their environmental impact, more sustainable glass options are likely to be extremely popular.

Gorilla glass will make cars lighter, stronger and less susceptible to damage. It can also incorporate touch-screen capabilities, so it seems highly likely in the coming years that drivers will have windscreens that are more and more reminiscent of their phones.

Enhanced safety and connectivity through windscreen technology

More and more vehicles are having technology incorporated into them in the form of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

With this in mind, the future is likely to see these systems enhance road safety and advance connectivity.

As these systems require sensors on the vehicle, often in windscreens, for the technology to work, it’s important that they’re recalibrated whenever any work is carried out.

At The Windscreen Company, we offer quality ADAS recalibration services that ensure all of your vehicle’s sensors and cameras are working as they should be following windscreen repairs or a full replacement. This provides our customers with peace of mind that they’ll be kept safe when out on the roads.

Overcoming challenges and charting the future

With future technological advancements an inevitability, this present manufacturers with challenges as well as opportunities.

For instance, the rapid switch to new technology will likely require a period of adaptation for all those within the industry.

But no matter what the future holds for windscreens, you can rest assured that The Windscreen Company will always be here to help.

Over the last 20 years, our team of experts has remained committed to keeping up with all of the changes and advancements in the windscreen sector, and it’s this dedication and wealth of knowledge that has seen us maintain our position at the forefront of the industry.
