After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the end of 2021 saw the return of the prestigious SEMA Show. One of the annual highlights in the automotive industry, the SEMA Show brings together some of the world’s greatest motoring manufacturers, enthusiasts, exhibitors and buyers.
Taking place at the start of November at the Las Vegas Convention Center, thousands of modified cars, trucks, SUVs, electric vehicles and just about anything on wheels, headed to Nevada’s iconic city as the show made a triumphant return.
The show was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, meaning that motoring fans and pundits were keen to get back to see what the show had to offer on its return.
A place where the industry’s innovators can display their work and share ideas, the 2021 edition of the show certainly didn’t disappoint.
The Speciality Equipment Market Association, or SEMA as it’s commonly referred to, was first introduced in 1963. Created to provide a place where automation experts and enthusiasts could come together and show one another their innovations and new ideas, it became hugely popular and, over the intervening years, grew significantly.
Now, it’s regarded as the pinnacle of automation innovation, and rather than just providing a platform to inform and learn from peers within the industry, it also has a big entertainment element.
The modern edition of the show places a much larger focus on its range of extravagant stalls and exhibitions that see a number of wacky and wild products on display.
At the 2021 SEMA Show, a combination of YouTubers, manufacturers, celebrity guests and car enthusiasts were in attendance, demonstrating just how much the event has changed over the years.
As well as the exhibition aspect, SEMA also releases annual indicators and predictions regarding the state of the industry. In January 2022, on the back of data gathered throughout the year and at November’s show, their annual report was released revealing what to expect in the coming 12 months.
While the report focuses predominantly on the American automotive industry, many of its findings are relevant to the wider world – including the UK.
Despite the start of 2021 showing promising signs in terms of vehicle sales, a global supply chain issue relating to semiconductor chips slowed this. In fact, 86% of manufacturers said they had been moderately affected by the disruption. According to data from SEMA, this disruption is likely to continue in 2022, and prices for certain materials (such as copper and aluminium) are also at an all-time high.
It’s predicted that the industry may not be on a stable footing until 2023, by which point prices will still be significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels.
Each year, SEMA also hosts an Industry Awards Banquet at Las Vegas Resort and Casino, where the industry’s best and brightest are honoured.
The night’s most prestigious award was ‘SEMA Person of the Year’ and it went to Sara Morosan, vice-president of custom motorsports brand LGE-CTS. She was recognised for her fantastic work during the pandemic that saw her create BAJA Forged, a specialist off-road company that creates custom-built vehicles.
‘Manufacturer of the Year’ went to Oracle Light, a company that are experts in automotive lighting.
