UK Electric Vehicle Demand Soars for 2023

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. With consumers becoming more conscious of climate change and their environmental impact, many are turning to electric cars to minimise their carbon footprint.

2022 was a stellar year for electric car sales, so in this article the team at The Windscreen Company will take a closer look at the trend, and how the demand for electric vehicles looks set to continue into 2023.

The popularity in electric vehicles soar

Electric vehicles are more popular than ever before. While they’ve been widely available to consumers since around 2015, back then only 1% were purchased. In 2022, this number had increased to 25% – a quarter of all vehicle registrations in the UK.

Last year, over 395,000 electric vehicles were sold – an all-time high. In fact, this represented a growth of a staggering 92% since 2020.

2023 is predicted to be a ‘year of recovery’ by motoring experts across the industry, with electric cars expected to continue their popularity.

The UK’s best-selling cars of 2022

2022 was a strange year for the automotive industry. Overall, a combination of the cost of living crisis, economic factors from COVID-19 and, perhaps most importantly, a continuing semiconductor chip shortage meant that new car sales fell to a 30-year low.

In 2022 only 1.61 million new cars were sold in the UK, the lowest level since 1992. Despite these lowly figures, almost a fifth of new car sales were electric vehicles, demonstrating how their popularity continues to soar.

The top ten selling cars in the UK are listed below, with many electric cars featuring prominently:

Electric vehicle changes in 2025

Alongside the environmental benefits, another reason why people opt to buy electric vehicles is that they are exempt from paying tax

However, this is set to change with the UK government announcing last year that Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) will apply to electric vehicles from 2025. Currently, VED applies to most vehicles, but electric cars have been exempt as a way to incentivise people to purchase one.

Under new plans that were laid out by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, electric cars that are registered from April 2025 will pay the lowest level of VED at a cost of £10. Then, it will move to the standard rate which currently stands at £165.

Despite the change, the RAC says it does not expect this to have a significant impact on electric vehicle trends.

In 2030, the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned. With this in mind, many people are likely to turn to electric vehicles in the intervening years as a result of this change.
