What Is It Like To Drive an Electric Car?

It’s common knowledge that electric cars are a more environmentally friendly way to get around, but what many people don’t know is that they’re also great to drive.

With more and more people making the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) ahead of the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, it’s worth understanding how it feels to be behind the wheel of an EV.

In this article, The Windscreen Company team will outline exactly what it’s like to drive an electric car, explaining the differences from fuel vehicles, as well as the wide range of benefits an electric vehicle offers.

Benefits of electric cars

Before we delve into what it’s like to drive an electric car, let’s first take a look at some of the great benefits of owning one.

  • Better for the environment – Undoubtedly, the biggest benefit of owning an electric car is that it’s better for the environment. The entire reason why companies and individuals are making this shift is to combat climate change, with non-polluting vehicles like this making up a key part of the strategy. Unlike petrol and diesel cars, EVs emit far fewer harmful greenhouse gases.
  • Cost less to maintain – Typically, electric cars are much more cost-effective to maintain. As the car’s battery is the most important part of the vehicle, it means there are no required oil changes or engine component replacements, and it’s less likely to experience the general wear and tear a combustion engine goes through.
  • Quiet to drive – Petrol and diesel cars can be extremely loud, making them irritating to drivers, pedestrians and those living in residential areas. There is no such worry with EVs as they glide around the streets in relative quiet. There’s still enough noise to alert pedestrians of their presence, but compared to their fuel counterparts, they’re incredibly quiet.
  • Government incentives – There are a number of Government-backed incentives you can make use of if you’re considering getting an electric car. This includes a grant for a home charging unit, as well as road tax and congestion charge exemptions until 2025.

What is it like to drive an electric car?

Many people will likely be purchasing electric vehicles for the first time in the near future. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to understand what it’s like to drive one.

Let’s take a look at the key features of driving an EV.

A simple drive

Many people find electric cars more fun and easier to drive than fuel alternatives. Primarily, this is because they’re similar to automatic vehicles in the sense that there is no clutch pedal or gearstick to worry about.

Unlike fuel automatic vehicles, which do have gears but the car just changes them for you, EVs work via an electric motor which means you only have to worry about going forwards or backward.

It’s that simple!

Large torque

Another reason why gears are not necessary in electric vehicles is that they offer instant torque.

This means that they can achieve full power immediately, and don’t need to warm up to it like fuel vehicles. As soon as your foot touches the accelerator you’ll be provided with significant power, which is another reason people enjoy driving them.

A secure and stable experience

Electric vehicles also provide drivers with a sense of security and stability when behind the wheel.

The car’s batteries are normally located below the seats, providing a low centre of gravity. Not only does this design offer stability, but it also makes the vehicle more agile.

Regenerative braking

When driving an electric car, you’re probably less likely to be hitting the brakes as often as you might be in a fuel vehicle.

This is because EVs have a regenerative braking system in place. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator, the car will almost immediately start slowing down. It slows at a faster rate than a normal car as it sends the power from the wheels back to the car’s battery.
