Electric Vehicle Driving Tips for 2023

As the world makes a conscious shift towards sustainable transportation, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more and more widespread.

In fact, electric vehicle demand has soared in 2023 demonstrating how consumer habits are changing in this direction.

Compared to petrol and diesel cars, electric vehicles have a more limited range and while the UK is getting better with its charging infrastructure it still has a long way to go.

With this in mind, electric vehicles sometimes need to be driven in a slightly different way in order to get the best out of their battery life.

In this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will take a look at some of the best electric vehicle driving tips that will help you when out and about.

Go easy on the pedals

Unlike fuel vehicles, electric cars have no gears, drive shafts or internal combustion engines that need to be ramped up. This means torque can often be created instantly.

Torque is a measurement of your car’s ability to get up to full power, and the greater the torque the faster your vehicle can accelerate. As electric vehicles can provide instant torque, it means they can be pretty powerful.

With this in mind, you should be gentle on the throttle when accelerating. This is because putting your foot down could considerably reduce your car’s range.

Regenerative braking

Most electric vehicles come with regenerative braking systems.

This means that when you take your foot off the accelerator, the car will instantly begin slowing down, with the motor feeding power back into the battery.

You can use this system to naturally slow down the car without having to hit the brake pedal, helping you to save its battery range.

Climate controls

There’s nothing worse than being stuck in your car on a long journey when the weather is either too hot or too cold. It can make the entire experience unpleasant, and you will likely find yourself turning to the heating or air conditioning.

However, wherever possible, it’s wise to go easy on these climate controls.

This is because these systems use large amounts of energy that can contribute to draining your battery. With this in mind, you should also consider turning off heated seats and steering wheels (if your car has these features) if you’re concerned about battery range.

Plan your route

Planning your route ahead of time is a great way to ensure you don’t add any unnecessary miles to your battery.

Taking the time to look where you’re going before embarking on the journey will minimise the risk of wrong turns or getting lost, both of which could add additional driving time that will eat into your battery life.

As well as this, planning ahead will also help you understand how many miles you will be doing, meaning you can ensure your car is charged to the appropriate level.

Pre-condition the cabin

As mentioned earlier, excessive use of your car’s air conditioning and heating can really impact battery life.

With this in mind, most electric vehicles come with a pre-conditioning function which allows you to set the temperature of your vehicle before you set off.

And the best thing is that this doesn’t impact your battery range.

Public charging etiquette

Even if you follow all of the above, there may be times when you’re away from home when you’ll need to charge your EV.

While public charging infrastructure isn’t as widespread as it may be in the future, there are still plenty of options out there. However, this does mean that there aren’t always enough charging points to go around. With this in mind, we’ve put together a quick guide to public charging etiquette that will help you when out and about.

  • Treat charging public charging points like your own – You wouldn’t leave your household EV charger in a bad state, so why would you at a public charging point? Untidy cables, connectors not left in the proper place and general mistreatment of a charging point can be an irritant for the next person to use it, so make sure to be courteous and treat the charging point as you would your own.
  • Don’t use charging points as parking spaces – Remember, charging points are not car parking spaces. If your EV doesn’t need charging, leave the charging point free for others to use, they’re scarce enough as it is without taking up a spot unnecessarily!
  • Share the chargers – Don’t hog the charging points. Think about how much juice your battery is going to need to finish your journey, especially if you’re heading home where you’ll have your own household charging point. If you don’t require 100% battery, be courteous to others and vacate the space when you’ve got enough charge to continue your journey.
  • Never unplug other vehicles – This is perhaps the biggest no-no when it comes to public charging etiquette. Unplugging someone else’s vehicle is extremely rude and likely to cause conflict if you’re spotted doing so. The only exception is if the owner of the car has left a note giving permission.
