Full Tank of Petrol Hits £100 for the First Time

From energy bills to food, it seems like the cost of pretty much anything you can think of has increased in recent months.

Arguably the biggest commodity to be impacted by the price rises is fuel.

For many months now, motorists have been hit hard by price increases, which are linked to a higher demand since the ending of Covid-19 restrictions and the war in Ukraine. While it’s likely you’ve noticed an increase at the pumps before now, the start of June 2022 saw the crisis reach an unprecedented milestone.

Fuel prices reach new all-time high

In March 2020, fuel prices plummeted as Covid-19 ravaged the world and people were encouraged to stay at home. This led to many people using their vehicles less and less, and so the demand for fuel decreased significantly. But since midway through 2021, when most countries started getting back to some semblance of normality, the price had been steadily climbing again as more people got out and about.

However, the war in Ukraine has seen this steady climb change into a drastic spike. This is because prior to their invasion of their neighbours, Russia was one of the world’s biggest providers of crude oil, supplying it to the UK, USA and Europe. Many nations have imposed economic sanctions on Russia and have chosen to stop purchasing all goods from them due to their invasion. This has meant that alternative suppliers have seen a greater demand for their petrol, thus leading to such a dramatic price increase.

And this price increase came to a head in June, when the average cost of filling up a typical family car reached a staggering £100 for the first time ever.

Described as a “dark day” by the RAC, average petrol prices now stand at around 182.3p per litre and diesel at 188.1p a litre.

While industry leaders and motorists alike have called on the UK government to do more to help with the rises, the increases show no signs of slowing any time soon.

Time to Buy an Electric Car?

With this in mind, many people are reducing the amount they use their car, turning to public transport and other means of travel. However, with the price increase showing no immediate signs of respite, as well as the negative environmental impact petrol and diesel cars have, now could be the ideal time to go electric.

While the initial cost of buying an electric car remains more expensive than a fuel version, more and more manufacturers are turning their attention to releasing EVs. This means that cost parity probably isn’t too far away. And in the meantime, due to the unprecedented petrol price increase, the cost of running an electric car is much cheaper. While there is no getting away from the fact that 2022 has also seen a huge leap in energy prices, the cost of charging your electric car will still be far lower than filling up at the pumps each week. As well as this, overall maintenance costs for electric cars are usually lower.

If you’re considering buying an electric car, be aware that the government provides a grant of 25% off the price of EVs (up to a maximum of £1,500) for all cars under £32,000. This grant used to have a far higher threshold, but it’s still worth making the most of. Plus, electric cars are exempt from road tax for the first year and, if you live in London, do not have to pay congestion charges.
