Tesla’s Next-Gen Electric Motors To Be Even More Efficient

The world’s most famous electric vehicle company, Tesla has announced its latest plans for the next generation of its electric motors.

While the brand’s creator, Elon Musk, has primarily been in the headlines for his acquisition of Twitter and its subsequent issues, his EV brand has continued to innovate and lead the way when it comes to manufacturing clean energy vehicles.

This month saw Tesla’s 2023 Investor Day, an annual event where Musk and other high-profile executives reveal their plans for the coming year and the future.

Let’s take a closer look at what was announced.

What has Tesla announced?

Prior to Investor Day, there were rumours that Tesla was going to announce a new car, however, what was actually revealed was just as exciting.

The brand announced that their next generation of electric motors will be far more efficient and affordable than previous iterations. The next powertrain will use 75% less silicon carbide without impacting performance or efficiency. As well as this, they announced that they’ll use zero rare earth metals – instead using a permanent magnet.

Most electric vehicles rely on rare earth metals, but with concern about how they’re sourced as well as the fact they’re predominantly found in China (a place that has less than friendly relations with the USA where Tesla is based), means companies are looking for alternatives and prompting Tesla’s decision.

In addition to this, they’ll require 50% less factory space and cost around $1,000 less to build per unit. This is an important detail as Tesla looks to make their cars more affordable for consumers and hit its target of manufacturing 20 million EVs a year by 2030.

What else is Tesla doing?

In addition to the announcement regarding next-gen electric motors, Tesla has a multitude of other exciting plans in the pipeline. It is also changing its low-voltage power system from 12 volts to 48, which will allow for a lower current, smaller wires and components that mean space will be saved and weight reduced.

Arguably Tesla’s most exciting development for 2023 is that production is set to start on the company’s Cybertruck midway through the year. One of the automotive industry’s most eagerly anticipated new vehicles, it was originally announced back in 2019.

Last year the company’s Giga Texas facility began prepping for production and in December an exciting image was leaked to the press.
