Can You Install an Aftermarket Heads-Up Display?

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems, or ADAs as they’re better known, are becoming more commonplace in our cars.

Electronic technology assists drivers with a variety of driving functions, and most vehicles that have been manufactured since 2016 have some kind of ADAS technology in place. This includes a heads-up display.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at aftermarket heads-up displays, exploring what it is, what it does and whether you can have them installed in your car.

Read on to find out more.

What is an aftermarket heads-up display?

More and more vehicles are being manufactured with windscreen heads-up display, or HUD, systems in place. While HUD is a fairly new development for automobiles, their origins actually stretch back to the Second World War and they’ve been used in military aircraft for many years.

HUD is a technology that projects texts, images and key information onto the windscreen in front of the driver. The purpose of the technology is to ensure that drivers keep their eyes on the road as much as possible. It will beam data such as speed, maps and other vehicle information onto the windscreen itself, meaning drivers won’t have to glance away from the road to read it, thereby enhancing road safety.

While a number of manufacturers are beginning to implement HUD into their vehicles, if your car does not have it in place there are a variety of aftermarket options you can install.

Can you fit them yourself?

Unlike standard HUD options that car manufacturers incorporate into their vehicles, most aftermarket choices are completely separate from the windscreen itself.

While every type of aftermarket HUD is slightly different, typically they’re extremely easy to fit and install. All you need to do is to find a suitable place on your dashboard, connect it to your car or smartphone (depending on the type), follow the setup instructions provided and you’re good to go.

What information do they display?

HUDs provide drivers with a whole host of key information, and the same type of data that a built-in system provides can be offered by the aftermarket versions. This type of information typically includes:

  • Speed limits
  • Road signs
  • Fuel levels
  • Car temperature
  • GPS information
  • And much more

All of these features are designed to keep the driver focused on the road ahead, and reduce the risk of an accident occurring.

Are they expensive?

The cost of aftermarket HUDs can vary significantly. The most expensive options can set you back between £250-£300 whereas cheaper alternatives can be purchased for around £20-£30.

In order to get the best deal for you, do your research prior to purchasing. Every type will have pros and cons so weigh up what is most important to you and select accordingly. Also, be sure to check that the type of aftermarket HUD you purchase is compatible with your vehicle as some will only work with certain types of vehicles.

Take a look at the section below for our recommendations on the best type of aftermarket HUD for your car.

Which are the best?

There is a wide range of aftermarket heads-up display options on the market, and it can be tricky to know what is best.

We’ve compiled some of the best types of aftermarket heads-up displays that can help enhance your driving experience. These include:

  • Lufi XF

This option acts as both a HUD and a multi-gauge, and is able to provide the driver with key information in real-time as you embark on your journey. The Lufi XF screen is renowned for being extremely bright and is visible even on very sunny days and is suitable for all vehicles built after 2004.

  • Hudway Drive

Regarded as one of the best aftermarket HUD options on the market, the Hudway Drive uses a Bluetooth connection to inform its display on key data such as location, speed and more.

This means that you can rest assured that the information on the windscreen is always accurate and up-to-date. There are also lots of customisable options available, and once set up on your smartphone you can specify which information you want to view.

  1. VGEBY HUD

The VGEBY HUD is probably the easiest to read aftermarket HUD available. Combining advanced technology and a handy processor means that the display is clear, easy to read and can avoid shadows obscuring it. However, you should carefully check that it’s compatible with your vehicle before purchase.
