BMW Introduces ConnectedRide Smart Glasses with Heads-Up Display (HUD)

There’s no doubt about it, the automotive industry is going through a period of significant change.

Whether it’s the shift to electric vehicles or the promise of a future world where self-driving cars will be the norm, the next few decades are likely to see some of the most monumental changes in the industry’s history.

With this in mind, many manufacturers are already introducing a variety of innovative features to their vehicles and other driving accessories.

This includes German giant BMW, who recently announced smart glasses that will come with ConnectedRide Heads-Up Display, or HUD, technology

In this article, the team here at The Windscreen Company will look at the development in greater detail, exploring what this type of tech could mean for the industry at large.

What is Heads-Up Display (HUD)?

Heads-Up Display, also known as HUD, is an example of an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), that is used to assist motorists as they go about their journey.

The technology uses various cameras and sensors that are located throughout the vehicle and which monitor where you are on the road. The HUD will project relevant road or vehicle information onto the windscreen in the driver’s eyeline. The idea is to give the driver an easy insight into their current driving specifications without them having to take their eyes off the road to glance at a dashboard, GPS or other type of display.

HUD is able to project text, images and even animations onto the windscreen, and the types of information that can be displayed include:

While HUD primarily focuses on windscreens in a car, BMW has thought outside the box to create smart glasses for motorcyclists.

What have BMW introduced?

BMW has taken HUD technology and incorporated it into eyewear. Creating ConnectedRide smart glasses, the product is for motorcyclists and works in much the same ways as traditional HUD. But instead of projecting information onto a windscreen, it is displayed on the wearer’s glasses’ lens instead. By broadcasting into a biker’s field of vision, it means they won’t need to take their eyes off the road ahead, hopefully helping to prevent accidents that can be much more fatal than those involving cars.

The glasses will be compatible with smartphones via Bluetooth, and are set to be released in the United States by the end of the year.
