BMW Set To Introduce Full Windscreen Heads-Up Display from 2025

The automotive industry is constantly innovating and evolving, with new technologies being introduced all the time.

Developments are regularly being incorporated into our vehicles to make driving safer, and more efficient, comfortable and enjoyable. One such development which falls under the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS, umbrella is Heads-Up Display (HUD).

HUDs are becoming more and more commonplace in cars around the world, and earlier in the year BMW made a significant announcement in regard to the technology.

At a tech show in Las Vegas, the German manufacturer announced that from 2025 they aim to have full windscreen heads-up displays in their cars. In this article, the team at The Windscreen Company will unpack exactly what this means, as well as take a closer look at HUD technology.

What is Heads-Up Display?

Before taking a look at BMW’s latest plans, let us give you a thorough explanation of what HUD actually is.

Heads-Up Display, or HUD as it’s more commonly known, is a technology that projects texts, images and key information onto the windscreen in front of the driver. The idea is to help drivers keep their eyes on the road as much as possible, reducing the need to glance away from the windscreen to find out information such as speed, maps and other vehicle information.

HUD can provide people with access to a variety of information, including:

The technology has actually been around for many years, originally starting out in military aircraft. In fact, primitive versions of HUD can be traced all the way back to the Second World War. Now, the technology is becoming increasingly available in cars and BMW’s announcement is another significant step in its rapid growth.

How does it work?

Cars that have HUD installed will have cameras and sensors placed in the vehicle. This allows the technology to have a thorough understanding of the road you’re on and the information you need to see. The car will also feature two computers that make sure all the information is accurate and up to date.

In terms of how the text and images are physically beamed onto the windscreen, this is done via a clever LCD display that reflects into two mirrors that can be found on the windscreen.

As your journey progresses, the screen will continuously adjust to make sure all the information is relevant and correct to your place on the road.

What is BMW proposing?

Up until now, HUD has only been positioned on one section of a car’s windscreen. But BMW has announced that from 2025, they’ll be the first manufacturer to utilise the entire screen providing information on the largest surface within a car.

The brand’s upcoming Neue Klasse range (named after BMW’s saloon cars of the 1960s and 70s) will feature fully HUD windscreens in a bid to further minimise the time a driver is looking away from the road, and to maximise space.

At an event in Las Vegas, the manufacturer unveiled their plans on their BMW i Vision Dee concept vehicle. As well as displaying how a full windscreen Heads-Up Display will look and work, they also revealed how they’re planning to use projection technology to enhance their vehicles in other ways. This includes giving drivers the ability to project their own personal avatar, favourite colours and even pictures and text on their vehicle’s side and back windows – giving the car a level of personalisation that has not been possible before.
