Debunking Common Car Stereotypes

We’ve all been there.

We’re driving down the road, see a certain type of car and instantly pass judgement over the type of driver behind the wheel.

Maybe it’s a flashy sports car that we assume will drive dangerously or perhaps it’s a more modest, family-looking vehicle that we think is going to go slowly.

But more often than not, these preconceived notions are more fiction than fact.

In this blog, The Windscreen Company team will debunk some of the most common car stereotypes.

BMW drivers are the most inconsiderate

BMW-drivers

Speeding, cutting people up, and not indicating when turning a corner for many motorists if they were asked which car manufacturer comes to mind when considering these characteristics, it’s likely that they would suggest a BMW.

This is because the German brand is often thought to be the vehicle of choice for the country’s most inconsiderate drivers.

Due to it being a more luxurious brand, many people assume that BMW drivers are more arrogant, entitled and have an overall sense of self-importance when behind the wheel.

However, this is a stereotype that has been perpetuated by a minority of badly behaved drivers and pop culture.

In fact, a recent study by car dealership Van Monster discovered that Audi drivers were most likely to commit 17 out of 33 driving misdemeanours, making them the worst offenders on the road.

And this brings us neatly to the next point…

Audis always understeer
Audis always understeer (1)

One of Audi’s most innovative inventions was the quattro all-wheel-drive system that was designed for additional grip for the brand’s rally cars. This system was also incorporated into Audi’s road cars, but they naturally understeer.

Now, there’s still a reputation that all Audi cars understeer, but this is no longer the case.

These days, preventative technology is used in the cars to stop understeer from occurring and it’s normally driver error when it does. Nonetheless, Audi still maintains its understeering stereotype.

Used cars always have problems

Used cars

Often, people will purchase used cars rather than new ones in order to get a cheaper price.

However, many people wrongly assume that buying a used car means that they’re bound to experience problems later down the line. This could include requiring regular repairs, having hidden issues and a shorter lifespan.

While it’s true that older vehicles are likely to require more maintenance, every car is different and a reputable dealership will be able to guide and provide you with all of the information you need.

With this in mind, if you go to a dealership with a good reputation and one you can trust, there is no reason why used cars should be any less in quality than new ones.

Volvos are the safest cars on the road

The steady Swedes who manufacture Volvos might claim that their car brand is the safest onein the world, but there’s not actually much evidence that backs up this stereotype.

While the brand has rightly earned a reputation for prioritising safety by introducing three-point seat belts and 112mph speed limits to its vehicles, there are plenty of other manufacturers that could also claim to be among the safest.

Volvo is frequently joined by the likes of Kia, Hyundai and more when it comes to winning industry safety awards. This means that while Volvo does provide safe vehicles, it’s no more so than other options.

Prius drivers are slow

For years, Toyota Prius drivers have been the butt of jokes regarding their speed. Many people assume someone that drives a Prius is a bad and overly cautious driver that can cause accidents by their slow pace.

However, there is no evidence whatsoever to support this.

A large proportion of this stereotype is down to the fact that the Prius used to be considered one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles, with people often assuming that those driving them were eco-warriors who were previously sneered at and looked down upon by some in the automotive community. They then assumed that a Prius driver would intentionally drive slowly in order to not rev their engines and release more pollutants.

However, these days, more and more electric vehicles and environmentally friendly vehicles are available and have become more mainstream.

This means that a diverse range of people drive Prius cars, and there is no evidence that they drive slower than any other vehicle owner.
