How Smart Eye Is Transforming the Automotive Sector

Innovation goes hand in hand with the automotive industry, with many of the world’s biggest manufacturers looking into ways they can make their products safer and more sustainable.

With this in mind, many brands have started adding artificial intelligence and vehicle automation technology to their vehicles.

One organisation that is helping enhance the future of the sector and make driving easier and safer for everyone on the roads is Smart Eye.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Smart Eye and find out how they’ve helped transform the automotive sector.

What is Smart Eye?

Founded in 1999, Smart Eye is a global human insight, artificial intelligence and technology company that provides innovative solutions to a wide range of sectors. The company’s headquarters are based in Sweden, with offices around the world including the UK, USA and Japan.

From these global bases, the company uses a combination of state-of-the-art technology and human behavioural research to produce products and services that enhance a wide range of industries.

This includes aviation and aerospace, media and marketing, psychology, and the automotive sector.

How is Smart Eye impacting the future of the automotive industry?

In 2021, Smart Eye acquired the software company Affectiva. Fronted by Egyptian-American computer scientist Rana el Kaliouby, this partnership has seen Smart Eye bring a whole host of driving monitoring systems and interior sensing solutions to vehicles around the world.

This includes using cameras and sensors within the car that monitor the driver’s facial expressions and behaviour when behind the wheel. The vehicle will then be able to recognise how alert and focused the driver is, and take corrective action to ensure the driver is paying attention. This includes visual and audio cues that can refocus drivers, and enhance road safety along the way.

The Six Levels of Vehicle Automation

Much of the work that Smart Eye does ties in with the advanced driver-assistance systems, or ADAS, that are becoming increasingly commonplace in modern vehicles.

Since 2016, the majority of new cars have been manufactured with some form of ADAS technology in place. There are six levels of automation when it comes to ADAS.

These are:

Level 0 – No automation. The driver is required to carry out all driving functions manually

Level 1 – Driver assistance. The vehicle has one automated system in place (such as cruise control or parking assistance)

Level 2 – Partial automation. The vehicle can take charge of tasks such as accelerating and steering, but the driver still has the majority of control

Level 3 – Conditional automation. The vehicle is able to take control of most driving functions, but the driver is still required to take over when necessary

Level 4 – High automation. The vehicle will carry out all driving tasks in specific circumstances, but the driver can take control if they wish

Level 5 – Full Automation. The vehicle is in full control of the driving experience. No driver input is required and the driver can read, watch TV and even sleep in the car

While we’re a long way off from full automation, the technology is constantly developing and within the next decade, it’s inevitable that more and more vehicles will begin including more ADAS features.

In fact, it’s predicted that by 2025 there will be around eight million autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles on the roads worldwide.
