Augmented Reality Heads Up Display

Augmented Reality Heads Up Display

Advancements in technology have always impacted the automotive industry and the way we drive.

Over the years, more and more innovative technologies have been introduced to vehicles, including augmented reality heads up display.

What is augmented reality heads up display?

It’s a technology that projects text, images and sometimes even 3D animations onto the windscreen in front of the driver.

Its purpose is to provide drivers with quick, readily available information on their vehicle or journey, without having to take their eyes off road.

The type of information that the technology can provide includes:

  • Speed limits
  • Road signs
  • Fuel levels
  • Car temperature
  • GPS information
  • And much more

While the technology is not yet widely available, a whole host of manufacturers have already begun to incorporate it into their own products, transforming how windscreens will be used in the future.

How does it work?

When implementing augmented reality heads up display to a vehicle, a number of sensors and cameras are placed on the car. This is so that the technology has a thorough understanding of your place on the road.

Most of the technology itself is installed within the car’s dashboard. Rays are transmitted from an LCD display and onto two mirrors that are located on the windscreen. This then makes it viewable by the driver.

In order to ensure that all the information is displayed correctly, and at the appropriate distance, the car has two central computers. It’s their job to calculate the accurate placement of every piece of data that will show up on the display.

The computer will also adjust all of the screen’s elements accordingly as you progress through your journey, ensuring you have access to all the information you need.
