Top 5 Predictions For the Electric Vehicle Industry

These days, it’s no longer unusual to see electric vehicles (EVs) out on the roads.

They’ve become extremely commonplace, with sales soaring as consumers become more concerned about climate change and government-offered incentives make them more attractive.

And while the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars has been delayed until 2035, the EV industry is showing no signs of letting up.

In this article, we’ll outline our top five predictions for the electric car industry that you should be keeping an eye out for in the coming months and years.

Fleets to go electric

It’s not just domestic, private customers who are making the change to electric. In fact, many commercial organisations and businesses are transitioning their fleet of vehicles to EVs from traditional fuels.

Not only is this being done to meet or get ahead of government guidelines on carbon emissions, but it’s also an acknowledgement that customers now expect a level of environmental care from companies.

Examples of industries that have already started making the change include couriers and delivery companies, car rental firms and taxis.

Reduced wait times

When EVs first started to appear on the marketplace, the wait time from order to delivery was substantial. The COVID-19 pandemic also caused delays industry-wide with supply chains, but the industry began to turn the corner in late 2022 and supply has been steady throughout 2023. These wait times are likely to get shorter again going forward.

More infrastructure

One of the biggest concerns people have when purchasing an EV is infrastructure. People often worry that there are not enough public charging points, but their number has grown exponentially in recent years and is set to continue in the coming years.

For example, the UK government has pledged to invest more than £1.6bn in EV charging infrastructure, which will deliver 300,000 public chargers by 2030. This is five times more than the current amount of diesel fuel pumps in the country.

More ADAS features

Many EVs include advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, that are designed to help with a variety of driving functions. Since 2016 these systems have become more and more commonplace in EVs, and as we look to the future, it’s a safe bet that they’ll become a regular part of our driving experience.

Some examples of ADAS include heads-up display, collision avoidance systems, autonomous emergency braking, and much more.

Improved battery technology

Another improvement that we’re likely to see is in regard to battery technology. Expect to see batteries that have greater capacity and faster charging rates than the current iterations.
