Mandatory Speed Limiters to be set in the UK

The automotive sector is constantly evolving and looking for ways to enhance safety and the overall driving experience.

Mandatory Speed Limiters to be set in the UK

2022 is set to be a big year for the industry, while it continues to battle the semiconductor chip shortage that has disrupted the last 12 months, new legislation is set to be introduced that brings mandatory speed limiters to new cars.

Utilising Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems, all new cars in Europe will need to have speed limiters in place that can detect how fast a car is travelling, and automatically slow it down if necessary.

In this article, we’ll explore the changes and how it’s likely to impact new vehicles here in the UK.

Speed limiters set for UK cars

All new cars sold from July 2022 will be required to have ISA systems in place, which are designed to prevent cars from speeding and reduce the risk of high-speed collisions.

The European Commission has introduced the plans in a bid to make European roads safer, and lower the number of fatalities that occur as a result of speeding. All EU nations will be required to follow the new legislation, with new models that have not been designed yet having to include the systems from 2022, and May 2024 for models that are already on the market.

Despite the UK having left the EU, it’s predicted that the same rule will apply here too, maintaining consistency across the continent.

There have been some concerns regarding the systems. While they’ve been introduced to reduce high-speed collisions and ensure the roads are safer for everyone, some road safety campaigners have actually suggested it may have the opposite effect if drivers are unable to accelerate quickly to avoid collisions or get themselves out of danger if a hazard occurs.

However, the European Commission has debunked this concern, insisting that drivers will still have the power to override the systems when necessary.

What are ISA systems?

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems are part of other advanced driver-assistance systems that are designed to make driving easier for motorists. Unlike other systems, ISA has been made compulsory for new vehicles.

ISA works by using a range of cameras and sensors that can detect speed limits on the roads you’re travelling on. If you begin speeding, the car will alert the driver by playing sounds, vibrating the steering wheel and providing guidance on the dashboard. If the driver continues to speed, the system will then reduce the engine’s power, bringing the speed down to a level that complies with the speed limit.

This is not the only type of system that is set to become mandatory in vehicles in the coming years. Others include:

It’s predicted that these measures, starting with ISA, will save more than 25,000 lives by 2038, and it will be down to individual manufacturers to determine how best to incorporate them into their models.
